New Delhi, Nov 16 (TNA) The union government has now allowed post-mortems to be conducted even after sunset in hospitals with adequate infrastructure. However, these do not include cases of murder, suicide, rape, mutilated bodies and death in suspicious circumstances.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted in Hindi: 'The system of British times is over! Post mortem will be done for 24-hours. Taking forward the idea of good governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Health Ministry has decided that the hospitals which have the facility to conduct post-mortem even at night, will now be able to conduct post-mortem even after sunset, he informed.

"In response to multiple references received by the Union Ministry of Health from various sources and in line with the Government's commitment to promote ease of living by reducing the compliance burden of government procedures, the post-sunset post-mortem protocol is effective from today," the health ministry said.

The ministry further said, "Apart from friends and relatives of the deceased, this new procedure also promotes organ donation and transplantation, as organs can be removed in a stipulated time after the procedure."

It has been clarified in the protocol that video recording will be done for all post-mortems throughout the night to remove any doubts and it will be preserved for future reference for legal purposes. However, cases of murder, suicide, rape, mutilated bodies and suspicious categories should not be kept for post-mortem during night time, unless there is a law and order situation, the ministry said.
