How Many More Before This Rape Horror Stops?
Lucknow, August 17 (TNA) Not just IMA and Allopathic Doctors, practioners of modern Medicine, but everyone, everywhere especially Homeopathic doctors, Ayurvedic Doctors, Unani Doctors, Destists, Paramedics, Physiotherapists, Medical Students, Chemists, Pharmacists, should join this protest and it should continue till there's a change after yet again a barbaric sexual rape, assault and murder in Kolkata..
Each 20 minutes a female is raped in India and every 76 minutes a child. We hear about horror stories, one more gory than other. And stop blaming women and their dress for rape and molestation. The problem lies definitely with males or an individual, their psyche, their hormones, their upbringing, their surroundings, their environment, the extent to which they repress their biological needs or supress their desires.
And no rapists don't grow anywhere in particular. Rather they are very much around us, seemingly normal from outside and brimming with passion or rage, inside. This is because males inability to express their emotions or communicate what's on their mind. This leads to coming forth of the feelings in uglier ways and to erupt off and on like a volcano. And this is one of the reasons why male rapes are hardly ever reported.
How many parents discuss about gender and sex with their children ? How many are willing to hear about their child's orientation and sexual preference ? How many have actually guided their sons how to behave with the opposite gender ?
On 14th February this year I wrote on social media about the hazards of random sex which is common around this time of year. There is exponential sale of contraceptives leading to lot of health issues amongst females. So this seemingly educated mother of two adult sons started schooling me that I should not be speaking about all this in open ie on social media. Do you think she would have counseled her sons about sex education, gender equality, not objectifying women etc.
This is the exact state of affairs. We assemble to protest and criticize the government and laws, cry hoarse seeking capital punishment for rapists, but when it comes to ourselves, we try to brush the entire topic under the carpet.
We need stricter laws, their implementation, better security, but it's really unfortunate that I cannot step out of my safe environs, without fear of being touched, groped, molested or raped. Each and every female lives each day with this fear day in and day out.
Before the government wakes up and takes a better call, it's the responsibility of each of us to look around. Look for any warning signs from an individual, listen to them, counsel them if needed.
I remember a male patient, with a criminal record, who was battling depression. He once confessed that just a streak of kajal in my eyes made me irresistible. He gave frightenimg details of what exactly he meant by that which was not at all pleasant to hear. But with each session of counseling and his explaining his mind, the thoughts became less and less intense and in few months he was back to his normal self, of which a woman need not be scared of.
Likewise we need a better understanding of people around us, closest to us. Mothers, sisters have great role to play there. And things are really out of hand, then doctors advice and proper counseling and treatment might prevent a few rapes in future.
