Surat, March 23 (TNA) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about PM Narendra Modi's surname. Soon after holding him guilty, the Surat district court however granted him bail and his sentence was suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision.

The case against the Gandhi scion was filed by BJP lawmaker Purnesh Modi for saying "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?" at a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In his first comment after the verdict, Mr Gandhi quoted Mahatma Gandhi, tweeting in Hindi, "My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God
