Muzaffarnagar, April 6 (TNA) Jaggery made in Muzaffarnagar district has got a GI tag. Due to this, there is a possibility of increase in the prices of local jaggery in the domestic market as well as in the international market, an official said while pointing out that at the same time, farmers of the district will also benefit from this.

 Jaggery of Muzaffarnagar district was selected in One District One Product (ODOP) scheme and has now got GI tag. GI tag is a type of seal. The receipt of the tag gives special importance to the product. At the same time, that region collectively gets the monopoly of its production. But there are conditions for this that the production of that item should be in the same area for which it is to be tagged.

 Significance of GI tag received by Jaggery

The GI tag (Geographical Indication) will become a part of the rich culture and collective intellectual heritage of Muzaffarnagar. The GI tag of jaggery is a sign of quality. The tag will play a vital role in expanding the market scope. This will also give a boost to exports and tourism.

Apart from promoting employment in rural areas, farmers and workers will also get protection. Due to this development of both sugarcane farmer and agriculture is possible.
