After Fog Blinds Drivers And Causes Mishaps, Agra Mayor Seeks Restrictions On Yamuna, Agra-Lucknow E-ways

Agra, January 22 (TNA) After a series of accidents due to dense fog on the Yamuna Expressway and the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Agra mayor Navin Jain has shot off a letter to the UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, suggesting restrictions on the movement of vehicles from 8 pm to 8 am, to prevent avoidable tragedies on the road.

In the past fortnight so many lives have been lost in collisions which could have been avoided if the vehicles had not been allowed in the foggy nights. So far there has been no response from the state government.

The ADF in its memorandum pointed out that in UP, in 2019, of the 42572 road accidents, 8031 were caused by dense fog, around 19 percent resulting in 3781 deaths and injuries to 5350. On the Yamuna Expressway, between 2012 and 2018, dense fog caused 235 accidents.

The Agra Development Foundation secretary KC Jain has also demanded stoppage of all vehicular movement if visibility was less than 500 metres. Most accidents occur between mid-night and dawn.

Because of the fog and intense cold, rescue operations also took a lot of time, causing deaths and prolonged agony to the injured, it was pointed out. Incidentally, chief minister Adityanath kicked off the 'Traffic Safety Month' on Thursday and claimed that since his government came to power, the incidences of road mishaps had been minimised.
