Agra Scribe Writes To PM Modi, Seeks Early Action On Reacquisition Of Kachchativu Island

Agra, June 13 (TNA) A senior journalist of the Taj city, Brij Khandelwal, has written to prime minister Narendra Modi seeking prompt action on reacquisition of Kachchativu Island, which was controversially ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government, an action that he underlined, violated the constitutional provisions.

“As you may recall, during your election campaigns, you vociferously raised the issue of Kachchativu Island, promising decisive action to address this historical oversight. The island holds strategic importance and has significant cultural and economic implications for the fishermen and people of Tamil Nadu” the veteran journalist wrote in the letter.

Khandelwal, was the first petitioner who challenged this decision in the Delhi High Court, highlighting the constitutional violations and the adverse impact on our national interest. Despite the passage of several decades, the resolution of this issue remains pending, causing ongoing distress and dissatisfaction among our citizens, especially those directly affected in Tamil Nadu.

He has requested PM Modi to consider either using diplomatic channels to purchase Kachchativu Island from Sri Lanka or, if necessary, employ more assertive measures to reacquire it. “The island's return to Indian sovereignty would not only correct a historical mistake but also reinforce our territorial integrity and support the livelihood of our fishermen” he further stated in the letter sent to PM Modi.
