Gorakhpur, August 11 (TNA) A German national serving a seven-year sentence in the divisional jail of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh has been freed on Tuesday, an official informed. Barend Manfred, who was jailed for the past seven years for drug trafficking was arrested in 2014 while smuggling drugs along the Indo-Nepal border.

Since then he was languishing in the Gorakhpur prison. For the release of Manfred, his wife had been lobbying for his release by staying put in Gorakhpur for all the seven years her husband was inside the prison. During this time, whenever her Visa expired, she used to return to Germany, only to return back. She had even rented a small house near the prison and had been waiting for her husbands release.

Manfred has now walked out of the prison and has been handed over to the German embassy officials under an extradition treaty between the two countries. He will serve the remaining sentence in his country of birth now.
