Lucknow, March 25 (TNA) The Income Tax department on Friday seized 1.6670 hectares of land worth Rs 35 crore at Junabganj in Banthara. Information about this property was obtained from the documents found in the raid at the house of Deshraj Singh Kushwaha, a property dealer of Kanpur and close to the former minister, in September last year.

The Income Tax Department has clamped down on the benami properties of Babu Singh Kushwaha, who was a powerful minister in the BSP government and was one of the closest aides of BSP supremo Mayawati. Sources associated with the department said that the purchase and sale of this land was done in a fraudulent manner.

The cheque numbers were mentioned in the paper only for show. This property was earlier in the name of a company which was later sold on paper to Deshraj, a close aide of Babu Singh while in reality the possession of the property belonged to the former minister only.
