Kanpur Youth Picked Up By Police On Suspicion Of Theft Dies, Family Alleges Police Brutality
Kanpur, Nov 16 (TNA) Already facing embarrassment over the alleged custodial deaths of young men in Agra and Kasganj, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday yet again found itself on the mat over the alleged death of a 25-year-old in Kanpur. The family of the young man alleged that the police picked up the 25-year-old Jitendra Srivastava, resident of Guva garden was picked up by the local police on Sunday on suspicion of his involvement in a theft.
The badly bruised body of Jitendra, the family said, was thrown outside their house in Kanpur on Tuesday and when they rushed him to a medical facility he died there during treatment. Jitendra was a daily wager and was scheduled to go to Mumbai in a few days for some job.
His mother and sister have accused the Panki Chowki in charge of keeping him in the lock-up and thrashing him brutally. The body of Jitendra has many bruises and injury marks suggestive of police third-degree torture. The family has kept the body of the youth on the road and is protesting. Senior police officials have since rushed to meet the family.
