Aligarh, Sep 14 (TNA) Months after reports of their differences hogged the media limelight, prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday heaped praise on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Speaking at a well-attended rally in Aligarh, the PM said that UP was a glaring example on how a state could reap rich benefits from the "double-engine government's".

"It gives me tremendous satisfaction that UP - once seen as a hindrance to the country's development - is today leading the biggest development campaigns of the country," the Prime Minister said at an event in which he laid the foundation stone of the Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University in Aligarh.

Speaking further on various achievements of the BJP government in the state as well as the centre, the prime minister said the state was emerging as a hot spot for investors from across the world and mentioned of the Jhansi, Aligarh and Lucknow nodes of the defence corridor and said thousands of crores was being invested here.

He also targeted former chief ministers of the state Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav, though without directly taking their name, and said that there was a time when the writ of criminals ran large across the state and corruption was the order of the day.

"All such criminals and mafias are now behind bars" he mused.
