Monsoon Mayhem: Wildlife SoS Rescues Over 100 Reptiles In Agra And Mathura
Agra, September 18 (TNA) Wildlife SOS’ Rapid Response Unit has successfully rescued over 100 reptiles from the adverse effects of heavy rains that recently inundated the entire western Uttar Pradesh including Agra and Mathura. The severe flooding led to the displacement of these reptiles, as their natural burrows and habitats were submerged, forcing them to seek shelter in urban areas.
Heavy rains in parts of western U.P left reptile habitats flooded and forced them to move out of their natural refuges. The period during the rains led Wildlife SOS to rescue many species, with the highest being the Indian rock python, followed by spectacled cobra (Indian cobra), Indian rat snake, checkered keelback and Bengal monitor lizard, to name a few.
The torrential rains caused significant flooding in the region, impacting not just human communities but also wildlife. Reptiles, which often rely on burrows and natural shelters, found their homes submerged and were compelled to emerge and seek refuge in nearby urban areas. This migration increased the likelihood of human-reptile conflict, making immediate intervention crucial.
Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS commented on the situation, stating, “The heavy rains have created challenging conditions for both people and wild animals. Our team has been working around the clock to ensure these displaced reptiles' safe rescue and relocation. It is vital that we provide immediate assistance to prevent harm to these creatures and to maintain safety within the city.”
Baiju Raj M.V, Director of Conservation Projects at Wildlife SOS, emphasised the importance of public awareness by stating “The recent situation has shown how intertwined our fates can be with wildlife. As these reptiles seek refuge from the flooding, they may end up in unexpected places. We urge the public to remain vigilant and to contact our helpline if they encounter a reptile in an urban area.”
Wildlife SOS urges residents to contact its helpline (+91 9917109666) immediately if they spot a reptile in or around their homes or urban environments. The organisation’s trained professionals are equipped to manage and relocate reptiles humanely, ensuring their safety and preventing potential conflicts.
