Stomach This: JNMC Surgeons Remove Rare Three Kg Tumour

Aligarh, July 3 (TNA) Mukesh, a 34-year-old resident of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh initially thought that a sedentary lifestyle may have caused bloating in his stomach, but alarm bells rang when the belly kept growing. By this time, he could barely sit, stand and breathe properly.

His scans at the Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) revealed that a rare Mesenchymal tumour weighing three kgs on the right side of the abdominal wall was also putting pressure on his internal body organs.

After a few consultations, a team of surgeons led by Prof Afzal Anees (Chairman, Department of Surgery) and Dr Yaqoob Wani with assistance of resident doctors, Chitra, Devanshu, Amrendra, Pranay and Firdaus successfully removed the risky tumour in a rare surgical procedure. Dr Muazzam and his team provided the patient with anaesthesia. Mukesh was subsequently put in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and later discharged after successful recovery.

JNMC surgeons unanimously said that it is very rare to remove a tumour this large. “It was a unique case as we rarely extract a tumour weighing three-kg. The patient and his family were informed of the risks involved in the procedure, but their trust in state-of-art facilities at JNMC kept them in composure”, said Prof Afzal Anees.

Dr Yaqoob Wani pointed out: “The tumour is not common. We get several patients with tumours in their stomachs or small intestines, but the one that was extracted was very different and big”. “Most Mesenchymal tumours are benign, but a large Sarcoma tumour that Mukesh suffered was malignant and could lead to death if it was not removed”, emphasised Prof Afzal and Dr Yaqoob.

Congratulating the team of surgeons, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said that it is heartening to notice that JNMC is providing the lower-income group patients with affordable super-specialist facilities and they do not have to reach private hospitals charging exorbitant fees.
