UP Governor Signs Ordinance Against Religious Conversions, Comes Into Force With Immediate Effect
Lucknow, Nov 28 (TNA) The Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel on Saturday signed the ordinance moved by the state government against unlawful religious conversions. A raj Bhawan communique said that the government had okayed the ordinance, thereby making it a law with immediate effect.
It was sent to the Governor for approval after the proposal of the conversion law was approved in the meeting of the Yogi Adityanath Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
The draft of the Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Conversion Prohibition Ordinance was sent to the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday for approval from the Governor.
According to the ordinance, if a girl's conversion from one religion to another is done for the sole purpose of marriage, then such marriage can be nullified. After the approval of the Governor, this ordinance will now have six months before the mandatory passage by both Houses of the state assembly.
