Chinese Scientists Claim “Significant Breakthrough” In Type-1 Diabetes Treatment
Beijing, September 30 || Chinese scientists have reportedly achieved a significant breakthrough by successfully treating a chronic type-1 diabetes patient through cell transplants, according to media reports. This landmark surgery, which is a world first, took only half an hour to complete, reports said citing The Paper, a Shanghai-based news outlet.
The patient, a 25-year-old woman, began naturally regulating her blood sugar levels approximately two and a half months after the procedure. Researchers from Tianjin First Central Hospital and Peking University were part of the team that published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Cell last week.
Traditionally, islet transplants involve extracting islet cells from a deceased donor's pancreas and transplanting them into the liver of a type 1 diabetes patient.
