Diplomatic Tensions Spill Onto The Sporting Field: RS Berkane Team Detained In Algeria

1 min read

Rabat, April 20 (TNA) The semi-final match of the CAF Cup between RS Berkane and USM Alger has taken an unexpected political turn. The Moroccan delegation faced major hurdles upon their arrival in Algeria, highlighting once again the persistent tensions between the two nations.

Despite obtaining special authorisation to travel to Algiers aboard a Spanish aircraft – circumventing the access restrictions imposed by Algeria on Moroccan flights since September 2021- the Berkane team was held at the airport for several hours. Algerian authorities even went as far as seizing the players’ equipment and football kits.

The reason for this blockade? The map of Morocco, including its Sahara region, is displayed on the Moroccan players’ uniforms. This symbol appears to have angered the Algerian authorities, known for their diplomatic blunders and animosity towards Morocco.

This incident, far from being isolated, sheds light on the challenges Moroccan athletes face when travelling to Algeria. It also underscores the consequences of political tensions in sports and the need for de-escalation to ensure the smooth running of sporting competitions.
