Finnish Endorsement Of Moroccan Sahara Autonomy Plan: A Significant Diplomatic Shift
Helsinki, August 6 (TNA) In a notable diplomatic development, Finland has endorsed the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, describing it as "a good basis for a solution" to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This stance was articulated in a Joint Communiqué issued in Helsinki on Tuesday, following discussions between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen.
“Finland considers the autonomy plan presented in 2007 as a serious and credible contribution to the UN-led political process and as a good basis for a solution agreed upon between the parties,” stated the communiqué. It reiterated Finland's support for a "political process aimed at reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution."
Both ministers emphasised the exclusive role of the United Nations in the political process, reaffirming their commitment to UN Security Council resolutions and expressing their respective countries' support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to advance this process.
This new position by Finland marks a significant departure from its previous stance, where it primarily supported UN efforts without taking a definitive position on the autonomy plan. Finland now stands as the first Nordic country to formally back the Moroccan proposal.
This shift also bolsters the momentum within the European Union, with Finland becoming the 17th EU member state to endorse autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
Finland's endorsement arrives just a week after France expressed a similar stance, further strengthening the international momentum. This momentum has been driven by the leadership of King Mohammed VI, who has garnered widespread international support for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara and the autonomy plan.
The Finnish decision reflects a comprehensive state position, involving both the executive and legislative branches. It follows consultations with the President and deliberations at the Government and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament, signifying a unified and strategic diplomatic stance.
Finland's support is part of a growing global trend recognizing the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a viable solution to the long-standing dispute, reinforcing international efforts to secure a stable and enduring resolution under Moroccan sovereignty.
